Paul Mitchell is in his final year at Chetham’s School of Music and studies Trumpet with Opera North’s principal Trumpet, Murray Greig. Paul started the Cornet at the age of ten in his local brass band, Besses Boys Band. Shortly after this he began his studies with his first trumpet teacher Brian Mather, before being accepted into the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain at the age of fourteen. During his time with the National Youth Brass Band Paul enjoyed playing in some of the country’s finest concert halls: The Bridgewater Hall, The Sage, Snape Malting and at the Royal Albert Hall for the BBC Proms. Paul also felt extremely inspired to try and become a professional musician by the Musical director he played under during his time at the National Youth Band, Bramwell Tovey. He was also encouraged to take up conducting by the assistant musical director at the time, Eoin Tonner.
It was in 2013 that Paul started to study at Chetham’s School of Music and he has especially enjoyed playing such a variety of music in a variety of different ensembles. These opportunities have included playing principal trumpet in the Chetham’s Symphony Orchestra, playing works like Tchaikovsky’s sixth symphony and Bernstein’s symphonic suite On the Waterfront, playing Lead Trumpet in the School’s Big Band and playing in smaller chamber music ensembles, such as brass quintets. Paul has had much success with the brass quintets that he has performed with and has appeared on ITV for the programmes annual Christmas Carols on ITV and will be performing at the prestigious Gower Festival in the summer with his brass quintet.
Paul has also performed in many solo recitals and concerts during his time at Chetham’s and has also performed in masterclasses with trumpet players among the likes of: Jens Lindemann, Rex Richardson, Alistair Mackie and Jason Evans.
In the future Paul would like to become a successful orchestral musician, as well as performing as a session musician and continuing to perform with other chamber ensembles. Paul will be continuing his music studies at the Royal College of Music from September.
On the night Paul will be performing the following works:
Hindemith – Trumpet Sonate- First Movement: Mit Kraft
